Halloween Pet Safety Tips (No Tricks, Just Treats)
A little planning keeps Halloween fun for everyone. These Halloween pet safety tips come from the SPCA of Wake County and NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine:
- Stash the candy. Chocolate is hazardous to pets, and sugar-free candy and gum can contain xylitol, which can be toxic to them. Raisins are on the no-go list too. Keep treats sealed and out of reach. If you think your pet ate something harmful, call your veterinarian right away.
- Make sure the costume fits. A good costume never limits your dog's vision, hearing, movement or breathing. It also shouldn't have small parts or loose ends to chew, or anything tight around the neck. Do a test run before the big day, never leave a costumed pet alone, and take the costume off if your pup seems stressed.
- Watch the door. Doorbells and costumed visitors can startle even confident dogs, and a door that keeps opening is an easy escape route. Set up a quiet room away from the front door with a bed, toys and water, and play soft music or white noise to drown out the knocking.
- Check ID tags and microchips. Make sure tags are current and your microchip information is up to date. A reflective collar is a bright idea for evening walks.
- Walk before dark. Take your dog out earlier on Halloween, keep a tight hold on the leash, and feed your pets before the festivities start.
- Keep decorations out of reach. Candles, jack-o'-lanterns, cords and costume accessories can cause burns or choking.

Our Team's Tips for a Calm Trick-or-Treat Night
- Get the wiggles out early. A good sniff-and-stroll in the afternoon helps many dogs settle down before the doorbell starts ringing.
- Practice the costume. Try it on a few days ahead and reward your pup with dog-safe treats. If the tail stops wagging, a festive bandana works just as well.
- Build a cozy den. A quiet room, a favorite blanket and some background music go a long way.
- Treat your dog, not with candy. Keep dog-safe treats in your pocket for the trick-or-treat rush, and keep the human candy for the humans.
Let a Hooman Help This Halloween
Heading to a party, taking the kids trick-or-treating or working late? Hooman On Demand can help keep your pup's routine on track:
- A calm walk before trick-or-treat time. Our Raleigh dog walkers can take your pup out on leash before the costumed crowds arrive, with 15, 20, 30 and 60-minute walks and one household at a time.
- Pet sitting while you're out. If you're celebrating late, a pet sitting visit can check on your pets, refresh their water and keep them company. We also offer cat sitting and care for rabbits, birds, ferrets, chickens, ducks and reptiles.
- Our hours. Our regular hours are 7 AM to 9 PM every day, with visits in Raleigh and surrounding areas including downtown Raleigh, North Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Durham, Garner, Morrisville and Wake Forest. Evening slots fill up fast around Halloween, so please book early.
- Peace of mind. Every walker and sitter is a pet owner, interviewed and third-party background checked. Each visit includes GPS-tracked check-in and check-out, photo check-ins and a visit report card. New clients also get a free meet and greet.
