National Fetch Day: Why a Simple Game of Fetch Matters More Than You Think
National Fetch Day was started in 2018 by the dog toy brand Chuckit!, and the idea is simple: grab a ball, head outside, and play with your dog. It was first celebrated on the third Saturday of October, and in 2026 it moved to May 16 to kick off the spring “fetch season.” Whatever the date on the calendar, fetch is worth making time for any day of the year.
More Than Just Chasing a Ball
Fetch is one of the oldest games people and dogs play together. It gives your dog a chance to run, focus, and burn off energy, and it gives the two of you a few minutes of one-on-one time. Plenty of dogs treat a good fetch session as the best part of their day.
Tips for a Safe, Fun Game of Fetch
- Pick the right toy. Choose a ball or toy sized for your dog's mouth, big enough that it can't be swallowed. Skip sticks, which can splinter.
- Warm up first. A short walk before you start throwing helps your dog loosen up.
- Watch the weather. On hot Raleigh days, play in the early morning or evening, find some shade, and bring water.
- Keep it short and sweet. Stop while your dog is still having fun, and watch for heavy panting or slowing down.
