Dog Walker in Preston and West Cary, NC: Greenway Links, Gated Entry and Walk Lengths

In west Cary, a lot of daily life runs along the greenways. A short asphalt path leads from a cul-de-sac to a school park, then to a lake, then to the next neighborhood. Dogs notice. They want out of the house in the middle of the day, too.

Hooman on Demand offers on-leash dog walks and drop-in visits in west Cary between 7 AM and 9 PM, seven days a week. The neighborhoods here are Preston, Preston Village, Cary Park and Amberly. Wondering if your street is covered? Enter your address on the sign-up form and we'll confirm coverage.

Greenways around west Cary

The Town of Cary lists more than 100 miles of paved greenway. These are the ones closest to this part of town, according to the Town's own pages:

  • Preston Village Greenway is 0.4 miles of 10-foot asphalt. It skirts Green Hope Elementary School Park, which is where you leave your car.
  • Glenkirk Greenway is a 0.2-mile spur near Olde Weatherstone Way, through woods and along the edge of the neighborhood. It's short, so it's a good fit for a puppy or an older dog.
  • Cary Park Lake Greenway is a 1.9-mile loop around a two-part lake inside the Cary Park subdivision. The Town notes that most of it is unshaded, and that going all the way around means two crosswalks on Cary Glen Boulevard.
  • Morris Branch Greenway is about 2 miles long and runs along the edges of the Amberly neighborhoods and Amberly Lake. It has on-street parking at several entrances.
  • Black Creek Greenway is the long one: 7.1 miles from Lake Crabtree to Bond Park. The Town posted on Oct 30, 2026 that it had fully reopened after renovations. Check the Town's alerts before you head out.

Most of these are 10-foot-wide asphalt, which gives you and your dog room to step aside for a bike.

For a larger outing, Thomas Brooks Park has 224 acres on Green Level Church Road, with a 0.5-mile walking track. Sears Farm Road Park has paved trails and a shaded lawn.

For off-leash play, the Town's dog-park list includes a fenced park at 7119 Carpenter Fire Station Road in west Cary. The list says no pass is required there. The other Cary dog parks need an annual membership or day pass.

Rules to follow with your dog

On Cary greenways, the Town asks you to keep dogs on a leash of 6 feet or less and to the right of the trail. In its parks, pets stay leashed at all times. Greenways are open dawn to dusk.

Commercial activity in Cary parks needs the Town's approval. So we describe these places as outings for you and your dog, not as walker routes. At your meet & greet we plan the walk around your street and your dog's pace.

Getting in: gates, garages and HOA rules

Many west Cary homes sit behind a gate or follow HOA rules. Bring whatever applies to the meet & greet:

  • the garage code, lockbox, smart-lock or key arrangement;
  • a gate code or a call-box contact;
  • alarm instructions and a backup contact;
  • any HOA notice about visitors or parking;
  • where leashes, waste bags and towels live.

You choose a 2-hour arrival window on any day of the week, and the walker knows what to expect at your door.

Yard play or a leash walk?

The 15-minute drop-in includes play in a fenced yard. It suits puppies, small dogs and dogs who need a quick break and a bit of fresh air.

If you'd rather your dog get out and about, book a leash walk. The walker clips on, heads out and stays with your dog the whole time. Each walk is one household at a time, tracked by GPS, and you get photos and a report card afterward.

30 minutes or 60?

Thirty minutes covers a potty trip and a decent stroll for most adult dogs. Sixty minutes is for dogs with more energy, such as young retrievers or shepherds, or for a day when you'll be gone a long time.

A 20-minute walk is a good in-between for a dog who gets tired fast.

Hours and prices

Walks run $24 for 15 minutes, $27 for 20, $31 for 30 and $45 for 60 minutes. Another pet in the same home adds $4. These prices start Nov 2, 2026. See Pricing & booking for details.

If you want help for several days, pet sitting means three 30-minute visits a day. There are no overnights.

Can my dog be off leash on a greenway?

No. The Town's rule is a leash of 6 feet or less. Off-leash play is for Cary's fenced dog parks, and the Town asks that dogs stay leashed entering, leaving and outside the fenced area.

What if my greenway closes?

Closures happen, and the Town posts them. If one affects your street, tell us and we'll adjust the visit.

Does the walker take my dog on the greenway?

Routes are planned with you at the meet & greet. We treat parks and greenways as outings for you and your dog.
