Dog Walker in Southpoint, Durham: Townhome Entry, Walk Lengths and the American Tobacco Trail

Woody, a mixed-breed puppy, waiting for his walker

If you live in a townhome in south Durham, your dog's day probably looks like this: a quick potty trip before you leave, a long wait, then an evening walk when you finally get home. A visit in the middle can split that wait in two.

Hooman on Demand offers on-leash walks and drop-ins from 7 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. The focus here is Southpoint, ZIP 27713. Not sure whether you're in range? Enter your address on the sign-up form and we'll confirm coverage.

Getting in: townhomes, HOAs and gates

Townhome and HOA communities often come with a few extra steps. Tell us which of these apply and we'll note them on your profile at the meet & greet:

  • a garage keypad code, a lockbox, a smart lock or a key handed over in person;
  • an HOA gate or call box, and the code or contact we should use;
  • a shared stairwell or a door that locks behind us;
  • which door your dog expects us to use;
  • your alarm instructions and the name of your vet.

We follow what you write down.

Which visit fits which dog?

Match the length to the dog.

Dog Visit that often fits
Young puppy, or a senior with stiff joints 15 minutes: a potty break and fenced-yard play, or 20 minutes on leash
Typical adult 30 minutes on leash
Big, athletic or restless dog 60 minutes on leash

If your townhome has no fenced yard, ask for an on-leash walk instead of the 15-minute visit. Every visit has a GPS track, and photos and a report card arrive once it ends.

A weekend outing: the American Tobacco Trail

Weekdays are for us. Weekends are a good time for you and your dog to try a longer outing together.

The Durham section of the American Tobacco Trail runs 11 miles. Durham Parks and Recreation describes it as a paved, 10-foot-wide off-road trail that follows an old rail line, and the Durham section ends at the Chatham County line, about 3,000 feet south of Scott King Road. The trail is busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists, so a few habits help:

  • Durham asks that pets on the trail be leashed and under control.
  • Keep to the right and let faster users pass on your left.
  • Triangle Rails to Trails says "wheels yield to heels," so bikes should give way to you and your dog.

We don't use this trail as a client route. It's yours to enjoy.

A closer park: C. M. Herndon Park

C. M. Herndon Park is a City of Durham park at 511 Scott King Road, ZIP 27713. The City lists it at 25.18 acres, open dawn to dusk, with trails, restrooms, a playground, athletic fields and access to the greenway. Triangle Rails to Trails notes that water is available seasonally at Herndon Park, typically April through November, so bring your own for your dog.

Durham's park page doesn't list a dog rule, so follow the signs posted at the entrance. Hours and amenities can change, so check the City's page before you go.

Southpoint questions

Do you cover 27713?

Enter your address on the sign-up form and we'll confirm coverage. Our service areas page has the current ZIP list.

Do you walk in the American Tobacco Trail?

We keep that for owners. The City asks that dogs there stay leashed and under control. We plan the walk around your street at the meet & greet.

What happens after each visit?

You'll see photos and a report card after each visit, and the GPS track shows where your dog went.

My townhome has no yard. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Ask for an on-leash walk of 20 minutes or more, and we'll plan the visit around your door and your street.

Should I start with 15 minutes or 30?

Start with 30 for most adult dogs. Use 15 or 20 minutes if your dog is a puppy or a senior.
