Dog Walker in Hope Valley, Durham: Southern Boundaries, Sandy Creek and Third Fork Creek

Pit bull sitting in a sunny park

A long day at the hospital, the lab or the classroom can leave a dog home alone for most of the daylight. If that sounds like your house in south Durham, a midday walk can break up the stretch.

Hooman on Demand schedules leashed dog walks from 7 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. We're writing here for the Hope Valley area of Durham. Our walkers go through an interview and a third-party background check. Enter your address on the sign-up form and we'll confirm coverage.

What changes between Durham and Raleigh

The walks themselves are the same as anywhere else: your dog on leash, no other household along, a GPS track, then photos and a report card. The difference is the ground rules around them.

  • Both Durham and Orange County have leash laws, according to the Duke Forest website.
  • Durham's four city dog parks each need a registration tag. Your dog has to show current rabies, distemper/parvo and bordetella vaccines, plus a negative fecal exam, before Durham Parks and Recreation will issue one.
  • Durham says its trail users should keep pets on a leash and under control.

That's why our walks stay on leash.

Parks and trails to enjoy with your dog

These are outings for you and your dog. Durham's park pages don't tell us what they allow for paid walkers, so we don't treat them as walker routes. At the meet & greet, we plan a route that fits your street.

Southern Boundaries Park. The City lists this 29.7-acre park at 3400 Third Fork Road (27707), open dawn to dusk, with restrooms, ball fields and tennis courts. It's also where the Third Fork Creek Trail begins.

Third Fork Creek Trail. A 3.6-mile paved off-road trail, 10 feet wide, running from Southern Boundaries Park to Garrett Road Park. The City warns that mud and water can appear during high-water periods.

Sandy Creek Park. At 3510 Sandy Creek Road (27707), with 101.7 acres and greenway access. The City says the park is home to a wetlands restoration project, and it lists a picnic shelter and restrooms. It's open dawn to dusk.

Cornwallis Road Park. At 2830 Wade Road (27705), 19.97 acres. The City lists a trail, a playground, outdoor fitness equipment and an 18-hole disc golf course. Dawn to dusk.

I couldn't find a dog rule on those park pages, so follow whatever is posted at each entrance.

About Duke Forest

Duke Forest comes up often when people ask about dogs in Durham. It is private land owned by Duke University for teaching and research, and its rules are strict:

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times, with a leash of 6 feet or less. Voice command doesn't count.
  • Visitors and dogs must stay on established roads and trails.
  • Commercial use is not permitted.

Because of that last rule, we don't walk clients' dogs there. It is a place for you and your dog to visit on your own time.

Duke Forest also has a seasonal closure. From Sept 21 through Dec 11, 2026, its Durham, Korstian and Blackwood Divisions are closed to the public Monday through Friday for deer herd reduction. Check the Duke Forest website before you go.

Letting us in

Tell us how you'd like us to enter: a keypad code, lockbox, smart lock or a key in person. We follow your alarm steps, keep your vet on file, and note any gate to latch. If your community has a gate, give us the instructions at the meet & greet.

30 minutes or 60?

Thirty minutes is a good first choice for many adult dogs. A big, energetic dog may do better with 60. Puppies and seniors can do well with 15 or 20 minutes, and that includes fenced-yard play on the 15-minute drop-in. Tell us how your dog reacts to other dogs, bikes and strollers, and we'll build that into the plan.

For more on breaking up a long day, see our midday dog walks in Durham article.

Hours and prices

We run 7 AM to 9 PM every day, and you pick a 2-hour arrival window. Prices start Nov 2, 2026. A 15-minute visit costs $24, 20 minutes costs $27, 30 minutes costs $31 and 60 minutes costs $45, with $4 added for each extra pet. See Pricing & booking for the full details.

Will you walk my dog in Duke Forest?

No. Duke Forest doesn't allow commercial use, so we leave it for you and your dog.

Does my dog need a dog park tag for your walks?

No. We walk on leash, not in dog parks. A tag only matters if you take your dog to a City of Durham dog park yourself.

Can I add a second dog?

Yes. Each extra pet adds $4, starting Nov 2, 2026. Tell us about both dogs at the meet & greet.
