Happy International Rabbit Day

Lop-eared rabbit sitting

International Rabbit day is an international day which promotes the protection and care of rabbits both domestic and wild.

Rabbits are ground dwellers that live in environments ranging from deserts to tropical forests and wetlands. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has been introduced to many locations around the world such as the United States and most domesticated rabbit breeds originated from Europe. Alarmingly nearly half of the world’s rabbit species are in danger of extinction!

Did you know that...

World-wide, rabbits are the third most popular pet, behind dogs and cats.

Also...

Baby rabbits are not called bunnies; they are kittens or kits.

There are more than 30 species of rabbits around the world and The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) recognizes 49 rabbit breeds. For International Bunny Day Hooman on Demand will be focusing on the Continental Giant Rabbit.

Rabbits originated from Europe and Africa, but they can now be found all over the world. Wild rabbits live in large groups called colonies. While quite prolific, some species are endangered, the riverine rabbit of South Africa included. None of its 10 subpopulations has more than 50 rabbits.

Happy International Rabbit Day

Many people keep rabbits as pets. Rabbits make good pets for several reasons, they are quiet, easy to housetrain, need little space and bond well with their owners.
