Dog Walker in Southwest Raleigh: Lake Wheeler, Carolina Pines and Swift Creek Bluffs

If your dog has a yard, it's easy to assume they get enough exercise. A yard doesn't walk a dog, though, and a workday can stretch past eight hours.
Hooman on Demand schedules dog walks and drop-ins for households around Lake Wheeler Road and the Swift Creek side of town (ZIPs 27603 and 27606). Each walker has been interviewed and third-party background checked.
Four places, four sets of rules
Four well-known outdoor spots in this part of town are run by different groups, and each has its own rules for dogs. They're all outings for you and your dog. Raleigh asks commercial users of its parks to hold a permit, and the Triangle Land Conservancy bans commercial activity of any kind. For that reason none of these places is a walker route. We settle your walker's actual plan with you at the meet & greet.
Lake Wheeler Park. The City lists this lake park at 6404 Lake Wheeler Road, with trails through the woods and down to the water. The park's rules state that pets must be restrained on a leash at all times. The City also warns that natural-surface trails can close after rain, so look at the trail status before you head out.
Carolina Pines Dog Park. Part of Carolina Pines Park at 2305 Lake Wheeler Road. The City describes fenced areas for large and small dogs, a wood-chip base, water, lights at night and off-leash roaming, free to the public. Read the City's dog park rules first. They cover vaccinations, collars, leashes at the gate and which dogs can come in.
Dix Park dog park. At 1800 Umstead Drive, with separate small- and large-dog areas on grass. Dix Park says dogs must be on leash outside the fence and that the park isn't supervised. Mowing and maintenance happen on Tuesday mornings from 7 to 10, and the park may close then. After rain it can be muddy.
Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve. This Triangle Land Conservancy preserve at 7800 Holly Springs Road (27606) has about a mile of trail through a creek floodplain and up a bluff, with some steep stairs. The conservancy welcomes dogs on a 6-foot leash and asks you to pack out waste. Hours are dawn to dusk.
One place to skip with a dog: Historic Yates Mill County Park. Wake County's visitor page says pets are prohibited.
Yard play or a walk?
If your dog has a fenced yard, think about what the yard gives them. It's a safe place to sniff and run. It doesn't give them a change of scene or a steady pace.
Our visits cover both.
- The 15-minute drop-in includes a potty break and fenced-yard play.
- The 20-, 30- and 60-minute visits are on-leash walks.
You can start with drop-ins and switch to walks once you see how your dog responds. Tell us what your dog does when you come home. A dog who races through the house is giving you a hint.
Getting inside
With a house, we'll ask which door we should use, whether there's a gate to latch, and where the leash and waste bags are kept. A keypad, lockbox or smart lock all work, as does a key you hand to us in person. For a townhome or apartment, we'll ask about building codes too. Alarm steps and your vet's details go on file too.
30 or 60 minutes?
Thirty minutes is a sensible starting point for many dogs on a workday. A dog with a lot of energy, or one who's been alone since early morning, tends to do better with 60. A senior dog or a puppy often does best with two short visits.
Dogs are walked on leash, one household at a time. GPS tracking, photos and a report card come with each visit.

Southwest Raleigh questions
Do you cover 27603 and 27606?
Enter your address on the sign-up form and we'll confirm coverage. The service areas page has the current list.
Can you take my dog to Carolina Pines or Dix Park?
Our walks are on leash, and off-leash dog park time is something to enjoy with your dog yourself. Both dog parks are free to the public. Our Raleigh dog parks page has the City's full list.
Is Lake Wheeler a good place for my dog?
It depends on your dog. The park requires a leash at all times, and its trails can be rocky and rooty. Call the park office on the City page if you want to check trail conditions.
My dog needs a break from the yard. What should I book?
A 20- or 30-minute walk. If your dog also likes yard time, ask about alternating with the 15-minute drop-in.
I'm closer to downtown than to Lake Wheeler. Which page should I use?
See dog walking in downtown Raleigh. If you're closer to Garner, we have a page for Garner too.
