Dog-Friendly Christmas Events in Raleigh and the Triangle (2026)

Woman resting her head against her dog in a warm hug

December in Raleigh is busy, and a lot of that fun can include your dog. There are Santa photo nights, an ugly sweater contest and a holiday market or two where leashed pups are welcome.

We kept this list to events whose organizers say dogs are welcome, and we checked the 2026 dates where they'd been posted. Where a date or detail is still from last year, we flag it. Events change, and weather can cancel outdoor plans, so check the organizer's page before you go.

Quick list: 2026 dog-friendly holiday events

Date (2026) Event Where Cost
Tue, Dec 1 and Tue, Dec 8 Santa Paws at Fenton Cary Free
Fri, Dec 4 Santa Paws (Durham Parks & Rec) Durham Free
Sat, Dec 5 Santa Paws with Triangle Beagle Rescue Cary $10 per dog
Sat, Dec 12 Photos with the Grinch at Boxyard RTP Durham (RTP) Free

Santa photos with your dog

Santa Paws at Fenton (Cary)

  • When: Tuesday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 8, 2026, 5–7 p.m.
  • Where: The Backyard at Fenton, 850 Lower Garden Lane, Cary
  • Cost: Free. No reservations.

Bring your pet for a photo with Santa, taken on your own phone. Event listings for 2026 also mention a holiday igloo for photos. The Dec 1 and 8 dates come from Raleigh Mom Club's 2026 listing, so check Fenton's event page for the latest details before you go.

Santa Paws in Durham

  • When: Friday, December 4, 2026, 5–8:30 p.m.
  • Where: Durham Armory, 212 Foster St., Durham
  • Cost: Free

Durham Parks & Recreation's Santa Paws is one of the bigger pet holiday nights in the Triangle. The City's page lists photos with Santa, a pup-up market, an ugly sweater contest, and a food and toy drive for pets in need. It's worth the drive from Raleigh if your dog is comfortable around a crowd.

Santa Paws with Triangle Beagle Rescue (Cary)

  • When: Saturday, December 5, 2026, 1–4 p.m.
  • Where: Fortnight Brewing, 1006 SW Maynard Rd., Cary
  • Cost: $10 per dog

This one supports Triangle Beagle Rescue of NC. Every breed is welcome for photos, not just beagles. Since it's at a brewery, plan on a busy, social setting.

Photos with the Grinch at Boxyard RTP

  • When: Saturday, December 12, 2026, 4–7 p.m.
  • Where: Boxyard RTP, 900 Park Offices Dr., Durham
  • Cost: Free

Boxyard's holiday page invites guests to "leash up the pup" for photos with the Grinch. It's a fun pick if your dog prefers green to red.

Holiday parties and markets for dogs

The Winter Wag at West Street Dog (Downtown Raleigh)

West Street Dog is an indoor and outdoor dog park and bar at 400 W. North St., Suite 110. Its Winter Wag in 2025 (Sunday, December 14) included a photo booth, vendors, treats, an ugly sweater contest and donations for local shelters. Entry was $10 for one dog or $15 for two. People in the off-leash area had to be 21 or older.

A 2026 date hadn't been announced when we checked, so watch West Street Dog's website for updates.

Worth a drive

Country Christmas Train at Denton FarmPark

Denton FarmPark (4259 Handy Rd., Denton) runs its Country Christmas Train from November 27 to December 23, 2026. BringFido reports that dogs may ride in their owner's lap. Denton is about a two-hour drive from Raleigh, so call the park to confirm the pet policy before you make the trip.

Holiday events where your dog should stay home

Some favorite Raleigh traditions aren't a good fit for dogs, or don't allow them.

  • Pullen Park Holiday Express (Dec 1–17, 2026): The City's page says service animals are allowed and pets are not. Tickets for 2026 are already sold out.
  • Raleigh Christmas Parade (Sat, Nov 21, 2026, 9:30 a.m.): We couldn't find an official pet policy. The parade draws big crowds, loud bands and long road closures, which most dogs find stressful. A walk earlier that morning is a kinder plan.
  • Umstead State Park on Christmas Day: The park is closed on December 25. Plan your holiday hike for another day.
  • Other downtown holiday events: We couldn't confirm dog policies for the skating rink, light displays, markets and New Year's Eve events, so we didn't list them as dog-friendly. Check with each organizer.

Tips for a calm holiday outing with your dog

  1. Walk first. A good sniff walk before a busy event takes the edge off.
  2. Use a fixed-length leash instead of a retractable one in crowds.
  3. Bring water, bags and treats for photo time.
  4. Watch for stress signals like yawning, lip licking, a tucked tail or pulling to leave. It's fine to head home early.
  5. Skip costumes your dog dislikes. A bandana or sweater is plenty for photos.
  6. Mind the food. Holiday markets have a lot of dropped snacks. Keep your dog close.
  7. Dress for the cold. Short-haired and small dogs may appreciate a coat on December evenings.

Traveling instead? We'll keep things merry at home

If your December includes travel, your dog can keep their routine at home. Our holiday pet sitting guide covers when to book, and our pet sitting page explains how visits work. Rover's holiday guide recommends booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead, so for Christmas that means by late November.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get pet photos with Santa in Raleigh?

In 2026, the closest options are in Cary and Durham: Santa Paws at Fenton (Dec 1 and 8), Durham's Santa Paws (Dec 4) and Triangle Beagle Rescue's Santa Paws (Dec 5). West Street Dog's Winter Wag in downtown Raleigh had a photo booth in 2025.

Are dogs allowed at the Raleigh Christmas Parade?

We couldn't find an official pet policy from the organizers. Because of the crowds and noise, we recommend leaving dogs at home.

No. The City of Raleigh says service animals are allowed, but pets are not.

What should I bring to a holiday event with my dog?

A fixed-length leash, water, waste bags, small treats and a coat if it's cold. If the event is off-leash, bring proof of vaccines.
