Dog-Friendly Coffee Shops in Raleigh: Where to Grab a Latte With Your Pup

Man sitting in an autumn park with his yellow lab

A morning walk that ends at a coffee shop is one of the best routines around, for you and your dog. Raleigh has a good number of cafes with outdoor tables where a leashed pup can settle in while you sip.

We checked each spot's address and hours on its own website. For dog policies, we used the shop's site where it had one, plus the Downtown Raleigh Alliance's dog-friendly guide (2024) and BringFido. Most cafes don't post a dog policy, so we flag anything we couldn't confirm. Seating changes with the seasons, so ask a barista the first time you visit.

First, how dogs and coffee shops work in North Carolina

North Carolina's food code lets food businesses allow pet dogs in outdoor seating areas. Dogs must be restrained and can't go inside (15A NCAC 18A .2656). Service animals are treated differently. In practice:

  • Your dog waits outside while you order. Bring a friend, or use the shop's mobile ordering if it has one.
  • Never tie your dog to a table or post and walk away. It isn't safe, and a startled dog can pull a table over.
  • Each shop decides. A patio doesn't automatically mean dogs are welcome.

Downtown Raleigh

Little Native Coffee Co.

426 S. Person St.

A small, friendly shop near the south end of downtown. The DRA's guide lists Little Native as dog-friendly and even says leashed dogs are allowed inside. Given the state rules above, ask staff where your dog can sit.

The Morning Times

10 E. Hargett St. · open daily 7 a.m.–6 p.m. (kitchen until 5)

A longtime downtown coffeehouse with breakfast and lunch. BringFido reports six pet-friendly outdoor tables, and the DRA lists it too. Grab a bagel and people-watch on Hargett Street.

Jubala Coffee (Downtown and Hillsborough Street)

301 Hillsborough St., Suite 120 · 2100 Hillsborough St., Suite 100

Jubala is a local favorite known for its waffles and biscuits. BringFido says the Hillsborough Street location near NC State has ten outdoor tables for leashed dogs, and that dogs stay outside while you order. We couldn't confirm a dog policy for the newer downtown location.

The Daily Planet Cafe

121 W. Jones St. (NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Nature Research Center)

This museum cafe serves coffee, breakfast and lunch and has patio seating. BringFido says dogs are welcome on the patio and mentions a dog menu. Dogs can't go into the museum itself, so this is a patio-only stop.

North Hills and North Raleigh

Jubala Coffee (North Hills and North Raleigh)

200 Park at North Hills St., Suite 140 · 8450 Honeycutt Rd., Suite 104

Third-party listings describe the North Hills shop as having outdoor seating where dogs are allowed. If you're in North Hills, Barking Dog (a dog-friendly restaurant) is a short walk away.

Sola Coffee Cafe

7705 Lead Mine Rd.

BringFido says the cafe has several pet-friendly outdoor tables. Visit Raleigh has also featured its patio as a spot to bring your dog. Try the mini doughnuts. Check Sola's website for current hours.

Pup cup and treat stops

Big chains often offer a small cup of whipped cream for dogs. BringFido lists several Raleigh chain locations with dog-friendly outdoor tables. Whipped cream is a treat, not a snack; skip it if your dog has a sensitive stomach.

Coffee shop etiquette for dogs

  1. Walk before you sit. A 20- to 30-minute walk first helps your dog relax on the patio.
  2. Choose a corner table so your dog isn't in the walkway.
  3. Keep a short, fixed-length leash in your hand or under your foot.
  4. Bring water. Not every shop has a bowl out.
  5. Hold the hot drinks high. A wagging tail and a hot latte don't mix.
  6. Go at off-peak times for your dog's first visits. Mid-morning on a weekday is calmer than Saturday at 10.
  7. Clean up, and leave the patio as you found it.

Places we left off (for now)

Press Coffee, Crepes & Cocktails (Glenwood South) has a large patio, but its official page doesn't mention pets, so it's off this list for now. Many other great cafes have outdoor seating but no posted dog policy. If your favorite is missing, let us know and we'll check.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs go inside coffee shops in Raleigh?

Generally no. North Carolina's food code allows pet dogs in outdoor seating areas but keeps them out of indoor areas. Service animals are treated differently. Plan for a patio visit.

Which Raleigh coffee shops have dog-friendly patios?

The Morning Times, Little Native Coffee Co., Jubala's Hillsborough Street shop, The Daily Planet Cafe and Sola Coffee Cafe are listed as dog-friendly by BringFido or the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. Confirm with each shop before your first visit.

Where can I get a pup cup in Raleigh?

Many chain coffee shops offer a small cup of whipped cream for dogs on request. Ask at the counter.

We don't recommend it. Bring a friend to hold the leash or use mobile ordering, so your dog is never left alone.

Weekday mornings after the rush are usually calmest. Start with short visits and build up.

Mornings are busy. We can help.

If your mornings don't leave time for a long walk, a Hooman midday walk keeps your dog's routine on track. Walks start at $24 for 15 minutes. See pricing. Book your free meet & greet or call us at (984) 212-2524.
