Dog Walking in Cary: Parks, Rules and Booking

Happy black and tan dog with a big open-mouth grin on a sunny walk past green shrubs

Cary has dog parks, a big lake park and miles of greenway, plus a few rules worth knowing before you clip on the leash. Here is what the Town of Cary says about where dogs can go, and how weekday walks with Hooman on Demand work when your workday runs long.

Cary's Leash Rules in Plain English

Cary's town code makes it unlawful to let a domestic animal be "at large" in town or on town property. The one exception: dogs may be unleashed in approved, designated areas inside Town of Cary dog parks (Cary Code, Sec. 6-65). In practice, that means:

  • Town parks: all pets must be on a leash at all times (Town of Cary park rules).
  • Greenways: use a leash no longer than six feet, walk your dog on the right-hand shoulder and remove your pet's waste (Town of Cary greenway rules).
  • Dog parks: the only places in town where dogs may be off leash, and only inside the fenced areas.

Cary's Dog Parks: What to Know First

Cary has four dog parks. Three need a pass (the Barkyard at Downtown Cary Park, Godbold and Jack Smith), and the Neighborhood Park at Carpenter Fire Station Road doesn't. For the three pass parks, you need an annual membership or a day pass, plus a signed waiver, and you enter with a RecTrac barcode. One pass works at all three.

A few rules from the town (Cary Dog Parks):

  • Vaccinations must be up to date.
  • Dogs under four months and female dogs in heat are not allowed.
  • Remove spike, choke, prong or pinch collars before you go in.
  • Each person may bring up to two registered dogs, and children under 12 are not allowed.
  • No food, bones or toys in the play area, and never leave your dog unattended.
  • Hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with no entry after 9 p.m. The parks close from 7 a.m. to noon on the second Wednesday of each month for cleaning and maintenance. The Barkyard also closes from 7 a.m. to noon on the fourth Wednesday, April through November.

Dog park time is something you do yourself. Our walks are on leash, so dog park time makes a nice weekend plan on top of weekday walks.

Leashed Walks at Bond Park and on the Greenways

Fred G. Bond Metro Park covers 310 acres and is one of the largest municipal parks in Wake County. Its gates open by 7:30 a.m. and close at sunset (Town of Cary). Cary's greenways are open during daylight hours only.

That matters this week. Clocks fell back on Sunday, Nov. 1, and the National Weather Service notes that the change brings earlier sunrises and earlier sunsets (NWS). For many Cary dogs, a midday walk is now the easiest way to fit in park or greenway time on a workday.

When a Walker Makes Sense

Cary families often juggle long commutes and full calendars. A midday dog walk breaks up the day for your dog and gives you one less thing to rush home for. Here is how the visit lengths fit a weekday:

  • 15 minutes: a quick potty break and a sniff around the block
  • 20 minutes: a short stroll to stretch the legs
  • 30 minutes: a neighborhood loop with time to explore
  • 60 minutes: a long outing for dogs with energy to burn

Going out of town? Pet sitting includes three 30-minute visits a day, so your dog keeps their usual routine at home.
